anyone here using 64 bit windows?

i wanna get a DIY pc, as of now i think i'm gonna get a 32 bit win7. just wondering if ren/cnc3/other games can run fine in 64 bit software? i thought i saw some articles/threads that said games would have some problems running on 64 bit OS... can't remember exactly.

ren runs fine in my win7 64 bit. It's decent with most 32 bit programs and it won't die in 2038 =p

They run. I'd suggest the 64 bit version though, providing the processor you get is 64bit. 32bit can only handle 3.25gb of ram.

Features. Home has basic functionality. Pro has stuff like BitLocker, WinXP virtualization, etc.

To be honest, my window panes are usually in one bit, never mind this 64bit - that's just too much of a draft.

As long as you dont log on to a Windows Network from home, Home Premium will be fine. Same is true as long as you stick to 1 physical processor. Running dual cpus (that's two real life CPUs as opposed to dual core).

As other's have mentioned - you can support far more RAM (>4GB)

and both 32 and 64 bit versions come with whatever version of windows you get so if you dont like 64 bit for some reason you can always switch to 32 bit

i'm thinking of getting 64 bit because i'd like to make full use of the RAM i intend to buy (2x2GB. 32 bit only supports 3GB RAM right?). and since when does the standard consumer market has mobos that support 2 physical processors?

oh? so the windows 7 CD will come with 64 and 32 bit versions? so i don't have to fork out extra $50 in my currency for 64 bit version? :o (i don't really know much as of now :( i'm gonna find out more when i make my purchase. might be a lesson not worth paying for -_- )

32 bit OSes can only use 32 bit addressing, that means that you can't access addresses higher than 4Gb (if you convert the address into a size). Consider that part of these addresses are PCI-express addresses, PCI addresses, Serial port, keyboard port and what else your system has, subtract all those address spaces from 4Gb and you'll have the max amount of RAM that your system can see with a 32bit OS.
It really depends on the motherboard that you have. I have seen a system that's only able to see 3Gb, my brother's pc can see 3.2Gb, while my system can access 3.4Gb, but yeah, you will never access the full 4Gb.
But don't be sad, consider that Windows7 uses far more ram than XP, and the additional RAM that the OS can access is already wasted :D. The 64 bit OS also gives you about 20% more CPU speed, but that's really an advantage of 64 bit games/applications only, so 32bit games will still run as in a 32bit OS.
So yeah, get a 64bit OS, every 32bit application will still work anyway.

Don't be sad if it uses upwards of 2GB at startup. I thought that was shitty and put it down to Windows just being Windows.... turns out it's being intelligent and holding stuff in RAM that you might need....after all, whats the point having lots of spare RAM around; you might as well fill it with something. This is a major difference between vista & 7 vs XP.

well xp does that too lolz, mine fills alot of ram for caching, which yes it's good, I was only talking about some more ram used by the OS for other stuff. Nothing big anyway, just not as big as on Vista.

The only thing that wont work on 64bit programs are 16bit installers/programs.
Considering most of these are programs before windows 95 you dont have much to worry :)

(for the old games like command and conquer DOS use dosbox)

you just get two folders with program files
program files
program files (x86)
the 32bit programs are installed in the x86 folder and the rest in the normal program files that belongs to the x64

just remember an x86 serial doesn't work with an x64 installation cd

That was the one I downloaded. It was the installer which didn't work.
