Teamspeak Install and Utilities
Utilities for teamspeak:
When in game you can use TeamSpeak Overlay to have the display of Teamspeak appear
When you're using the Winamp player while you're connected to a teamspeak 2 server, TSMate will lower Winamp's volume while someone speaks.
Download TSMate 1.3
Teamspeaker is a GUI application similar to Teamjoin. It offers a TTS (Text to Speech) function and allows you to play custom WAV files on certain events + more.
Download teamspeaker
For those with G15 keyboards - Display TeamSpeak on your LCD screen
A complete newbie's guide to teamspeak
What's teamspeak?
The idea is that whilst you are playing a computer game, you can communicate with other players on your team.
What hardware do I need?
A computer (obviously), some speakers or headphones and a microphone. You will also need a sound card or built in sound. To listen to the chat you just need speakers (or headphones). To chat you need a microphone.
What software do I need?
Teamspeak and optionally TeamSpeak Overlay. I am assuming that you are using Windows.
Where do I get the software from?
Links could change however for the time being they are:
Teamspeak
Voice Overlay
How does it work?
You install the teamspeak client on your computer. The client software communicates with a server and coordinates all of the talking. This is known as "voice over IP" or "VOIP".
Download the latest stable release
Go to the download section on the teamspeak website. At the time of writing, the current non-beta release is 2.0.32.60. There is a Beta release - try at your own risk! Click a download link next to the above version. Click 'I agree' to the teamspeak EULA. The download will begin. Save the file anywhere you like (requires approx 6Mb of disk space).
Install the exe that you just downloaded
Double click the file that you just downloaded. The teamspeak installation will start. Click 'Yes' to "This will install teamspeak 2 RC2. Do you wish to continue?".
Click 'Next'.
Click 'I accept the agreement', and then click 'Next'.
Choose where you want to install the program. The default value should be fine, so you can click 'Next'.
Choose where you want to have the program shortcut placed on your Start menu. The default value should be fine, so you can click 'Next'.
Check/uncheck 'Create desktop shortcut' to your liking. Click 'Next'.
Click 'Install'.
Click 'Next' when asked if you want to install the codec required by teamspeak.
You should see some text like this:
OS type: Windows NT 5.1 (Windows XP) Service Pack 2
CELP file entry not found.
CELP file not found.
Successfully copied lhacm.acm(CELP)
Created/updated CELP file entry.
Created/updated CELP desc entry.
Click 'Next'.
Click 'Finish'.
The installer will display some release notes. Click 'Next'.
Click 'Finish'.
Launch teamspeak and connect
Hopefully you should find that the vanilla install of teamspeak requires no special configuration. The important part is to tell teamspeak how to connect to the Exodus teamspeak service.
Launch teamspeak (double click the desktop icon, start menu shortcut or the teamspeak.exe)
Click 'Connection' then 'Connect'."
In the "Local addressbook" tab, right click in the left-hand pane and click 'Add server'.
Type in a name of your choosing ("Exodus" would be ideal)
On the right hand side, there are quite a few blank fields of which some need filling in. Complete them as follows:
* Label: Should already be populated with what you typed in above
* Server address: exodusgaming.kicks-ass.net
* Nickname: Your Renegade player name (ideally)
* Allow server to assign a nickname: Leave unchecked
* Login name: Leave blank
* User password: Leave blank
* Auto reconnect: Leave unchecked
* Default channel: Leave blank
* Default subchannel: Leave blank
* Channel password: Leave blank
Now click 'Connect'.
Register your nickname
If you wish to register your nick on the server, click 'Self' then 'register on server'. Complete the login name, password and password check fields.
Once registered, alter the connection information by clicking 'Connection' then 'Disconnect' on the main menu then by clicking 'Connection' then 'Connect'.
Once you have filled in the login name and password fields, click 'Connect'. When looking at other users in teamspeak, you will notice an "R" or "U" next to the names. There are other letters but these are the most common. U=Unregistered, R=registered. You should now have an "R" next to your nickname.
Testing your microphone
When people talk in teamspeak, a little circle lights up next to their name. The aim is to only light up when you are actually talking and not humming, sniffing or scratching your arse. To adjust this threshold, click 'Settings' then click 'Sound input/Output settings'. Note that it's probably better not to be connected to a channel when you do this setting up. In the "local test" section of the settings windows, click 'activate local test mode'. Speak into your microphone. If required, adjust the 'voice activation level' slider until the light on lights up when you speak.
At this point, on a new install of XP, nothing happened. Why? Because my microphone level was too low. To adjust this, double click the speaker icon next to the clock in your system tray, or go into the Control Panel and click 'sounds and audio devices', then 'Advanced' in the "device volume" section. Both ways should show the "Volume control" mixer.
If you see a microphone slider, turn it up. If you don't, click 'Options' then 'Properties'. Check the 'Mic' option then click 'OK'.
* Tip 1- Microphone muting can stop any echo!
* Tip 2-If required turn on microphone "boost" via the 'Advanced' button under "mic" on the volume slider.
Switch back to teamspeak which should still have the local test mode active. Test again. Once you are happy with the level, deactivate the local test mode by clicking the button.
Other settings that are useful
If you cannot hear the other users very well, adjust the output settings. Click 'Settings' then click 'Sound input/Output settings'.
In 'Settings', then 'Options' you can change the volume (or turn off) teamspeak event noises like other users joining and leaving which can get a bit annoying of the channel is busy.
How will I recognise people's voices?
After a while you recognise the voices of players. However, there is a nifty overlay program that will show you in game who is speaking. I believe there are a few solutions out there that achieve the same thing however I use one called TeamSpeak Overlay. When you are playing, voice overlay displays the name of the active voice(s).
How to run everything together
Start voice overlay and connect it by pressing the big red button.
Start and connect teamspeak.
Launch Renegade via renconnect/renip/ASE/WOL/GameSpy/Direct as you usually do.
