Assault Cube is a counterstrike like game where you run around and shoot people. It has quite reasonable graphics and good gameplay.
Since we have openned a server in it, it has been close to number 1 on the board and has had no problem filling.
The game is free and can run on almost every computer. It uses minimal resources and even works with a slow internet connection.
Cunin is the lead admin of this new server and it will reside in the #AssaultCube channel of IRC. The server is hosted on this IP address: 216.245.195.90
To run the game download from here.
It runs on linux, mac and windows and with the patch is only around 42 meg.
And here is a youtube video which shows some gameplay.

Ok I know, graphics sucks, so if you only care about that you won't like this, but it's fun if you can get over it.
What I like about this game is that there's no reasons to not have it. It's small, free and works on any pc with any internet connection.
It's also a very fair game. I don't like games where you need to know every map very well, so you know where the most powerful weapon spawns. Here YOU select the weapon you want, whenever you want (if the game mode allows you to do so).
All players have a default set of weapons: a knife and a pistol. Then you have your primary weapon, that you can select from 4, at anytime by accessing the ingame menu or by pressing 'b'. Select your new weapon and then, next time you spawn, you'll have it. Throughout the maps, you can find ammo boxes which can give you a share of ammo for your main weapon, ammo clips for you pistol, healthpacks to recover health, armor jackets to gain armor and the dual-pistols, which will give you, for a limited amount of time, the dual-pistol weapon, which is a powerful weapon, but not THAT powerful if your aim sucks. You can also find grenades around. To use them you can use the default key, right mouse button, and then throw them by using the left mouse button.
Another thing I don't like in other games, is camping. Here it's harder to camp, as your ammo is very limited, so you need to go around to pickup the ammo boxes, and also it's not hard to kill campers.
The main game mode I've set on the server is "Team one shot, one kill" with a few maps with the alternate mode "One shot, one kill". I've carefully chosen the best maps for these modes, so they aren't so big and complex. It spawns all players at start, then give you a sniper rifle (which you cannot change, so everyone have same weapon) and a knife. All players have 1 of health. You can shoot them wherever you want and they'll die instantly. You gain 1 point for each kill, 2 if you "gib" them. To gib players you either have to shoot them at the head, or kill them using knife. An example of this mode (on the best map for this) is this (first part of the video):
You cannot die by falling, and you can kill teammates (though that will make you lose points). To zoom in your scope, use the right mouse button. You can watch current match ladder with TAB key, crouch with SHIFT, and watch a map overlay with ALT.
The server allows you to vote on many things, like changing gamemode/map and kicking a player (should do that only for AFK players, or very laggy ones).
This game got an amazing amount of gamemodes and maps for its size, "Team DeathMatch", "Hunt the Flag" and "Keep the Flag" are very good ones too. You can also find the more common "Deathmatch" and "Capture the Flag" modes.
The single player is basically non-existent, as the bots are kinda dumb.
It's also a good game for a quick match when you have to kill time. It loads in a second, same for loading new maps while playing.
Another amazing feature of this game, is that it integrates a map editor. While playing (if the server allows it, or in single player), you just press the "e" key and you enter edit-mode. You can then edit your map using your mouse and keyboard as if you were playing, then press "e" again and you can test it straight. You can also edit it in multiplayer! You usually start a passworded server and then let your friends join, and then start mapping with your mates, press "e" and test it, press "e" and tweak it, and so on.
When you got your map edited, you save it (don't ask me how, I never done it), then you can join a server and vote to load that map. If your vote passes, you can upload the map on the server (by typing /sendmap in chat) and then all players can get it by typing /getmap in chat. The usual map size is very small, from 10 to 30 kilobytes, so they also loads instantly.
The gameplay may feel a bit odd at first, but you only need a few matches to get used to it. I suggest you to always aim for the head, as that deals more damage than aiming for the body.
The server for this game uses basically no resources and a very limited bandwidth, there is no downside in running it and so i decided to give it a try.

yeah i don't know if you can disable that, but I would leave it on anyway, it makes the match more interesting.
I think I'll give the admin pass to all our playing moderators anyway, whenever the server is full or almost full, there's lots of assholes playing lol, and it needs moderators.
Or maybe we can start hiring mods just for this game...we'll see.

Playing AssaultCube on random public servers, can be fun, but you will also meet the most idiots that way lol. The best thing to do I believe, is to organize what we call interclan matches on IRC, where you get a group of players that you know are skilled and cool, and you all have a few rounds just for fun. It's way better than just hoping on a public server imo, cause there is no worries of people doing stupid stuff. CTF with some mates, and private mastermode ftw!

I was looking at this thinking... hmm.. .this game looks fun, but my computer was $539.00 when i bought it and that was 4 years ago and it included a 19 inch flat screen monitor. All that to say, my computer sucks and I was unsure if i could run this game.
Then i found these system requirements on Raiden!!
System requirements aren't too bad either. They call for:
1GHz or higher CPU
256MB RAM
GeForce 4 MX or equivalent GPU.
However, if you want to play at the maximum settings. The requirements are a bit stiffer. You'll need at least:
2GHz or higher CPU
512MB RAM
GeForce 6600 or equivalent shader model 2.0 GPU
And at Maximum, the picture is, in my humble opinion, as good as, if not better in some ways, than many proprietary offerings.
