Stan's link points to a $1,599 machine!
Some other options:
http://www.tigerdire...AIN#detailspecs
http://www.newegg.co...N82E16834220567
Its hard to work out what is better for you, since one with good cpu and gpu might have a 13" screen, however the exact same machine with a slightly worse gpu might have a 17" screen. There are of course lots of other factors like quality of the finish, weight, feel, colour etc, stuff -no one else will know how important these are and of course some are subjective.
I think the best thing to do right now is tell you what you should be looking for when spending $1200:
CPU -
At least a Intel Core 2 Duo T9600(2.80GHz) or a Intel Core 2 Duo P8700(2.53GHz)
RAM - 4GB
Disk - doesn't really matter on size but one that spins at 7200rpm rather than 5200 will be better for you
GPU - Try to get an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 or NVIDIA GeForce GT 220M (4650 is better than a 220M)
So with that said, the link above (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220567) is best, but only has a 13" screen. Performance wise it kicks ass for the money.

the $1599 is in our local currency, so i haven't overshot his US$1300 budget
well yes, i agree that the one selling at newegg is good. seems like the notebooks with better specs and prices can't be found over here where i live
but watch the weight. 5.51 pounds might be a little heavy. (about 2.5kg)
like i said, carrying a 15.4' beast is a bitch, so i looked for 13.3' and 14' laptops.
tan: http://sg.asus.com/p...aspx?l1=5&l2=23 but they don't show any prices
pc show is coming!

Don't get acer.
My bro got a hard core Acer laptop and I did too.
Even my Acer 7520 (google that for the specs) get's shit FPS drops when something sudden happens in a renegade game.
Glad to have a normal PC too, so I can play ren on that without too much lag issues other than connection stuff.
